Rayleigh is a market town between Chelmsford and Southend-on-Sea. Historically, it would have been a centre for all the agricultural activity in the area and a meeting place for local farmers and farm labourers. Market towns were the locations where the local farmers would have sold stock, hired farm labourers and spent some of their profits. A modern market town like Rayleigh is very different – in fact, it is very similar to other towns in that it has the usual collection of shops, cafes and offices.
The changing character of Rayleigh is reflected in the changing hazards facing the population, and in the work of a personal injury lawyer who works for no win no fee on Rayleigh cases. Several hundred years ago, there would have been no personal injury lawyers working for no win no fee on Rayleigh cases at all – people could not claim compensation when they were injured in an accident that was not their own fault. There simply were no excellent legal firms like Accident Advice Helpline around to help people if they were hurt in accidents that were not their own fault.
The historical perspective
Several hundred years ago, a large proportion of the population worked in agriculture in the UK. There were very few agricultural machines and implements, and those that did exist were pulled by livestock such as cattle or horses. The speed of traditional farming was slower and more labour-intensive. There were many health and safety hazards – basic agricultural machinery was often unguarded and could seriously injure limbs. The horses and other livestock also presented some risks as they were being handled.
If someone was injured, the medical treatment was extremely crude. Cuts and grazes could easily become infected in a dirty farm environment, as there were no antibiotics to treat wound infections and infectious diseases. The treatment of broken limbs was basic to say the least, while in other cases it was extreme – some limbs were amputated.
If you had an accident, you were seen as either unlucky or careless. There was no opportunity to seek the services of a lawyer working for no win no fee on Rayleigh cases and start a personal injury claim. Sick leave did not exist, and financial hardship following an accident was commonplace.
The modern perspective
Modern farming is a highly mechanised industry, so there are fewer people working in agriculture these days. However, agricultural machinery can present major hazards, with powerful moving parts that can inflict terrible damage to the human body. Safety precautions are stringent, but not always followed, and as a result accidents can happen.
