Long Clawson is a small village within the ceremonial county of Leicestershire, in the East Midlands region of England. The village is one of a number of small settlements within the Vale of Belvoir, which is mostly associated with food production as its main economic activity.
The Etymology And Early History Of Long Clawson
In the Domesday Book of 1086, the village which is now known as Long Clawson was recorded as Clacheston and it is believed that this name is thought to derive from an ancient megalith, or standing stone, found in the area. An apparent three foot long fragment of this ancient stone is still visible embedded in a tarmac footpath close to the modern day Long Clawson Manor House. The ‘Long’ affix to the village’s name was added at a much later date as a nod to the fact that the village does stretch for over a mile along its main road way.
Long Clawson And Stilton Cheese
As was touched upon earlier, Long Clawson is one of a number of locations in the Vale of Belvoir which is best known for food production and in this village’s case it is Stilton cheese. Long Clawson’s dairy is in fact one of only six dairies within the United Kingdom which does produce the speciality cheese and was founded more than a hundred years ago in 1911. The dairy is today prospering and supplies over 40 farms, employs about 200 people and produces 6,700 tonnes of cheese in 60 varieties every year.
The Village Of Long Clawson
In spite of the prosperity of the dairy, Long Clawson as a village has actually declined in terms of other businesses calling the village home but this is widely seen as a reflection of a wider trend rather than a symbol of the health of the village itself. This is an opinion which is borne out by the fact that the population of the settlement is in fact growing, and this makes certain issues more pertinent to the modern day village.
