Exeter is a historic city within, and the county town of, the county of Devon in the south west of England. The city is situated on the course of the River Exe, approximately 37 miles north east of Plymouth and 70 miles south west of Bristol. Exeter has a long and varied history which dates back to Roman times when the city was the most south-westerly fortified Roman settlement in the country.

One of the most fascinating events in this long history came in 1068 when Exeter, possibly because it was home to the mother of the recently killed King Harold, rebelled against the rule of William the Conqueror. William promptly headed south west and laid siege to Exeter, with the siege lasting a total of 18 days before the King accepted the city’s honourable surrender and swore an oath not to harm the city. In spite of this oath however, William did quickly construct Rougemont Castle nearby to ensure the continued obedience of the city.

In more recent history, arguably the most notable occurrence in Exeter came during the Second World War, when much of the city was damaged or destroyed by 18 intense bombing raids from the Luftwaffe. This destruction was followed in the 1950’s by a period of redevelopment when many damaged buildings were demolished and replaced rather than restored, meaning that much of modern day Exeter has been shorn of evidence of the city’s ancient history.

In the modern day, Exeter has recovered from these tragic events to become a popular and bustling city, and the 2011 census recorded a bumper population of over 117,000 in the region, which means that Exeter does suffer from issues such as traffic, pollution and higher than average accident rates. This final point does also mean that the topic of conversation and the phrase no win no fee in Exeter does arise comparatively often.
