No win no fee for compensation claims in the UK

Accidents that cause injuries have been around forever, has have the faultless victims of the accidents. Personal injury claims have been around a very long time, certainly the last couple of centuries at least. The problem has always been that legal costs are not cheap, so only those with plenty of money have ever been able to make a personal injury claim for compensation.

This made a bit of a mockery of the UK law which states that if you have been injured in an accident that was not your fault, if your injuries needed medical attention and the accident happened within the last three years, you are entitled to claim compensation from the guilty party for the suffering they have caused.

A law meant for everyone that only the rich could utilise. The government tried to help by introducing legal aid for claims. They did this about the same time as they started the NHS, and it did help the poorest of society get what they were entitled to. But now you either had to be rich or poor and if you were neither, there was no help with your personal injury claim.

The introduction of no win no fee for compensation claims in the UK

In 1998, the government abolished the assistance of legal aid for personal injury claims, but the 1999 Finance Act introduced the use of the conditional fee agreement. What has become better known as no win no fee came into use for claim in April 2000, and finally anyone could make a personal injury compensation claim.

At the time the media speculated that the no win no fee for compensation claims UK would bring a huge increase in the number of claims made. This did not materialise, and although there was an increase in the number, it was only small.
