    Whiplash ligament strain

What is a whiplash ligament strain?

‘Whiplash’ is the name that is given to an injury where the tendons and ligaments of the neck are damaged by the victim’s head being jerked to one side, often because a sudden start-and-stop motion. A whiplash ligament strain is very painful.

One of the most common causes of this type of injuries are car collisions, typically a rear-end shunt, where the front of one car collides with the rear of another, causing the driver and any passengers in the front-most car to be unexpectedly pushed forward.

Although it is most commonly encountered as a result of a vehicular collision in a road traffic accident, there are other types of accidents that could also potentially result in damage to the soft tissues in the neck. For example, if you have been shoved to one side by a person pushing past you very suddenly, this could result in your head and neck being quickly thrust to one side of your body. Similarly, a slip, trip or fall from height can also result in your head being thrown to one side, which could cause these type of injuries.

How to deal with a whiplash ligament strain after an accident

After being involved in a serious accident – no matter what kind of accident that may have been – it is vital that you seek out medical attention. This is because some symptoms – such as tenderness in the neck, migraines, reduced mobility in the neck, or dizziness – may take hours or even days to develop.

It is also important to note that if the accident that caused your injury was due to the negligence of another person – such as another driver, pedestrian, cyclist or motorcyclist – then you could be eligible for personal injury compensation. This compensation could include a payment not only the physical harm caused, for any injuries you suffered and the psychological harm you experienced, but could also take into consideration the costs, expenses and losses you faced because of your injuries.
