What is whiplash? Almost everybody has heard of it, but what exactly is it – and how can it affect your everyday life? Read on to find out all about it!
Whiplash – the facts
Whiplash is a condition in which the neck’s tendons and ligaments are damaged by a sudden impact that jerks the head.
When you get a whiplash injury in Stoke-on-Trent, it may be caused by a car accident; indeed, this is the type of accident that most people associate with whiplash.
But it may also be caused by anything that causes a sudden jolt to the head, such as a blow to the head (for example, in contact sports), or a slip and fall.
Its onset usually takes a few hours, so you may not realise you have it until the following day. You could wake up in the morning, having gone to bed the night before feeling okay, and find that your neck is painful, tender and far less mobile than usual.
What to do if you get a whiplash injury in Stoke-on-Trent
First of all, make sure you get to the doctor’s surgery as soon as possible to get checked out, and have your injury diagnosed. Don’t forget that there could be something else wrong, in addition to the whiplash – especially if you have been involved in a quite serious accident.
Secondly, make sure you recover. Your doctor will advise you, of course, but you will probably have to rest and take pain medication. You may also need some time off work, and you could find that you can’t do a lot of the things you usually would.
Thirdly, call Accident Advice Helpline to make a claim for compensation!
Your compensation case
If you have suffered a whiplash injury in Stoke-on-Trent, you could experience financial problems as a result of taking time off work (loss of income), seeking help from elsewhere (e.g. a childminder or home help), and having to pay for prescriptions and taxi or bus fares.
If the accident that caused your injury was someone else’s fault, you could make a claim for compensation, which, if successful, will result in your being awarded a payment to cover these losses and costs. You will then be able to recover fully, without the added stress of financial hardship.
