    Whiplash Injury in Steeple Ashton

Steeple Ashton is a village in Wiltshire and it can trace its history back to the time of the Saxons. However, there is evidence of Bronze Age inhabitants in the surrounding area, so it has been a place of habitation for thousands of years. It was a market town, granted a charter (in the 13th century) to hold a weekly market and a three-day fair between the 7th and 9th of September every year. It was a centre of the wool trade, with villagers participating in the spinning and weaving processes in their own homes. There were also the wealthier clothiers who sold the cloth that had been spun and who owned sheep. John Leland visited Steeple Ashton in 1540 and he wrote that it was “a pretty little market town” which “standith much by clothiers” but sixty years later all the affluent clothiers had abandoned the town. The “Steeple” part of the village’s name comes from the spire of St Mary’s church, and the name Ashton implies that once there were many ash trees where the village stood. The village can boast a number of cruck-framed houses some with thatch, and it is well worth a visit if you happen to be in the area.
