Staffordshire, in the West Midlands has been famous for its porcelain and fine china since the 17th century, with Stoke-on-Trent being the centre of the Potteries. There was local clay in the surrounding area, but later this was imported from Cornwall. This area of Staffordshire was also important in the coal mining industry. Steel was also produced in the area. There is, naturally, a Potteries Museum and art gallery and the Gladstone Pottery Museum in the city. The Wedgewood factory also has its own museum. The city is not far from Alton Towers Theme Park, which is also in Staffordshire.
