St Davids is Britain’s smallest city, having been demoted to a town in 1888 (prior to that date city status was granted to a place which had a cathedral). However in 1994 Queen Elizabeth II conferred city status to St Davids once again, on the grounds that it has an important Christian heritage and was once a city. St David is the patron saint of Wales, and his bones are apparently interred in the cathedral of St Davids, which makes it very important for Wales. Many of the old Welsh and Cornish ‘saints’ are not recognized as such by the Vatican, but St David (Dewi Sant in Welsh) is, as he was the Bishop of Minevia in Wales and Pope Callixtus II accepted that he was a saint in 1120, following the work done by Bernard, Bishop of St David’s.
