    Take care of yourself

When you are recovering from an accident you need to take care of yourself. One of the best ways to do this is to eat a healthy diet and make sure that you get enough antioxidants. This is how important they are – without antioxidants in our bodies, many of us could possibly fall foul of cancer or numerous infections within a few months. Luckily, our bodies do produce their own antioxidants but we also need to boost our defences by constantly stoking up our supply by eating a diet rich in antioxidants.

Antioxidants protect the body against free radicals. These are chemicals which are formed in the body as part of its metabolism and defence against bacteria. It is now known that cigarette smoking, illness, environmental pollution and ultra violet light can increase the body’s production of free radicals. If the free radicals are left unchecked they can help to create conditions such as precipitate heart disease and cancer.

    Neutralise free radicals

At times of illness or great stress, the body needs more antioxidants that it can produce. Vitamins E, C and beta carotene (the plant form of vitamin A) help to neutralise free radicals. Some minerals also help: selenium can be found in avocados and shellfish; copper is in nuts, seeds and shellfish; zinc also is found in shellfish. Bioflavonoids also have antioxidant properties. These can be eaten in citrus fruits and grapes.

The best way to start a change in your diet is to up the fresh fruit and vegetable aspect of it. For a long time, it was suggested that five a day was sufficient but recent reports believe that we need more. To make things easier if you always start the day off with fruit, have a salad with your lunch, some vegetables with your evening meal and a couple of pieces of fruit before bed, you will automatically get enough without having to think about it. It’s a habit well worth getting into.
