Insurance companies report 20% increase in fraud on the previous year. Insurance companies are actively involved in the arguments. One of the fraud sections reported that last year they identified one in every seven third party injury claims as being fraudulent. Apparently they are investigating suspicious injury claims which are linked to fraud rings and suggest the figures are a 20% increase on the previous year.
It seems that organised crime has got a firm foothold in whiplash injury territory. Some insurance companies are reporting that they have successfully identified and prosecuted claims and sentences ranging from 4 to 7 years were handed down to the guilty parties.
Statute of limitations to be reduced?
In recent months, the government had become involved, and in a report issued in July 2013, MPs stated that it was about time that insurance companies put their house in order to reduce the incidence of fraudulent whiplash injury claims.
These claims have been responsible for adding as much as £90 to every motor insurance policy premium. MPs have further suggested that the statute of limitations should be reduced and that more medical evidence should be submitted with each claim.
Supporting the suggestion of a special whiplash injury review committee
Injury claim solicitors firmly support the position whereby genuine whiplash injury victims should be entitled to appropriate compensation. It is totally unfair that this right should be denied because of the fraudulent act of other unscrupulous individuals and organised criminals.
The suggestion that a special review committee is set up to vet suspicious whiplash injury claims would appear to be the most equitable way forward.
