    Whiplash injury in Bassenthwaite

Recent news from the Australian National University may affect the way that a whiplash injury in Bassenthwaite, or indeed in any other part of the UK, is handled in the future. It could be the answer that the insurance industry is looking for in terms of attempting to sort out the wheat from the chaff in respect of bona fide versus bogus claims.

    Utilising new technology

They used something called a 3-Tesla Magnetic Resonance Imaging scanner (MRI), which is able to generate more detail and clarity than the normal 1.5-Tesla MRI scanner. According to the research leader, Dr Alexandra Web, the 3-Tesla machine is more capable of spotting damage in the neck following a typical whiplash incident, and recent improvements in imaging technology have made the identification of structural changes in the neck joints and muscles much clearer to spot and analyse.

The possibility of a joint investment between the NHS and the insurance industry

The problem is of course that rolling out new technology across something as large as the U.K.’s NHS service will run into millions, and perhaps even billions of pounds.

However, with the current NHS spend of approximately £8 million on whiplash treatment, and the £2 billion that it is estimated to be costing the insurance industry in terms of paying out compensation, perhaps, it’s something they may well look towards as some sort of joint venture in the foreseeable future?

The U.K.’s driver population as a whole is footing the bill

In the meantime, the U.K.’s government has advised insurance companies that they should no longer pay compensation unless they have been given some sort of firm of medical proof to substantiate that a whiplash injury has indeed taken place. Up until now insurance companies have satisfied themselves with making compensation payments, and increasing insurance premiums to all motorists in order to cover the costs. In other words, the genuine whiplash injury victims, and indeed the U.K.’s driver population as a whole, are subsidising the high amount of bogus claims that are being registered.
