Did you know that the name of the area of West Bromwich is actually derived from the Old English language? It was originally called Bromwic, which comprises of two Old English words.  The word bróm pertains to the broom plant, a shrub which usually has yellow flowers. The branches of the plant was used for sweeping, ultimately giving rise to the modern meaning of the word broom to mean a sweeping tool. The word which originally was used to describe any dwelling place or farm, but later came to mean town or village and more specifically, dairy farm. Therefore Bromwich or Bromwic translates as meaning dwelling located near where broom plants grow.

    The Domesday Book Of 1086

The area of Bromwich is mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086. This famous book was in essence a tally or record of the majority of properties and lands within the country. It was commissioned by William the Conqueror as a means of assessment for tax purposes. He was able to use the information to establish how much money was owed, dating from the rule of Edward the Confessor. The original manuscript may be found in the National Archives in London, however there is an on line version which may be perused if you are interested in local and national history as well as place names and their origins.
