Have you had an accident in the Rotherhithe Tunnel? Then you most certainly require the services of specialist traffic injury lawyers in Rotherhithe

If you live and work in south east or north east London, the chances are high that your path will traverse through the area of Rotherhithe, or indeed through the Rotherhithe Tunnel. The Rotherhithe Tunnel is one of three sub-Thames pass ways and was built way back between the years of 1904 and 1908. The tunnel was originally constructed to cater for commuter traffic. As soon as the tunnel was opened it was well used, with 2,600 vehicles travelling through it every day from the day it was opened. By 1955, the number of vehicles using it on a daily basis had quadrupled to 10,500 vehicles per day, and again by 2005 the usage had tripled one again to 34,000 road users per day.

This marked increase means that high levels of congestion and lengthy tailbacks are a daily rite of passage when travelling back and forth through this gateway across the Thames. There is access for pedestrians and cyclists through the tunnel, but in view of the high volume of slow moving vehicles, especially during peak travelling times, it is something to be endured rather than enjoyed.

Because the tunnel was originally constructed to serve horse-drawn carriage traffic between the docks on either side of the river, there are strict width restrictions on the size of vehicles that can enter the tunnel. Also, due to the shallow gradient and many twists and turns (to prevent horses from seeing daylight and bolting), the tunnel is difficult to traverse, so strict speed limits of 20 miles per hour are in force. It’s not surprising, therefore, that when traffic levels are this high, accidents are bound to occur.
