    Three Rivers car accident

How to overtake safely and avoid a car accident

Overtaking is a risky manoeuvre, as it means putting yourself in the path of other vehicles in order to get ahead of the car in front of you. In order to be completely safe, it is best not to overtake at all, but in some cases it may be necessary to overtake other cars on your journey.

Most people overtake simply because they feel as though the car in front of them is going too slowly. You should always think as carefully as you can about whether or not you should overtake, and know how to do it safely if you are going to avoid a Three Rivers car accident.

    • Decide whether or not you really need to overtake. The safest way to overtake is to not overtake at all. Many people decide to overtake another driver simply because they are feeling impatient. Just because you want to be moving faster doesn’t mean that you should, and you should always bear in mind that there may be something in front of this other driver that you cannot see.
    • Decide if this is a good time to overtake. Even if you have a good reason to overtake, doesn’t mean that this is the right time to do it. Consider weather conditions, how busy the traffic is, and whether you have a clear run to get in front.
    • Signal. Never overtake without letting the cars both in front of and behind you know what you are about to do. If you don’t signal, then someone else may try the same thing at the same time and cause an accident.
    • Don’t be aggressive. Signal first and wave your thanks after the overtake. Driving aggressively and rudely can only lead to road rage and potential accidents.
