The symptoms of a rib injury

Are you suffering the symptoms of a rib injury?

The symptoms of a rib injury can vary depending on the type of accident you’ve suffered. Generally caused by some kind of impact to the chest, you will feel pain in your chest and difficulty in breathing normally.

Swelling and visible bruising over the chest area is often a sign that you’ve had a rib injury. It may be painful to breathe in but it’s important not to take shallow breaths if you can help it. This can lead to a chest infection. Try to breathe normally.

You may develop a cough and if this becomes severe then seek medical attention quickly. If you’re coughing up blood or mucus then this could indicate an infection. Again seek medical attention urgently.

Rib injuries usually resolve fairly quickly but our advice is to get medical attention for the symptoms of a rib injury as soon as you can following your accident.

    How did your injuries occur?

If you’ve been in an accident and you believe someone else’s negligence caused you to be hurt then get some legal advice.

If you fell in the street over unmarked road works or a broken paving slab then you could claim compensation. If you’ve broken your ribs in the workplace and it wasn’t your fault then you may have a strong case. An accident on public transport may have caused your rib injuries.

    Evidence for a compensation claim

It’s a good idea to gather together some evidence of what happened to support a compensation claim if you decide to make one.

Take photographs of the scene of your accident or your injuries. There are usually other people around so witness details are important.

The most important evidence is your medical records. See your GP for some pain relief and to get some advice on looking after yourself as you recover from your rib injury.

If you’ve been in a serious accident then the symptoms of a rib injury will be obvious and you may have been treated in hospital.
