The town of Sutton Coldfield is situated in the West Midlands region in England and the town was the location of a gang attack on a convenience store that resulted in a police officer being injured. Police were called to the Tesco Express Great Barr convenience store on the night of August 24 after they received reports of a gang attempting to steal money from a cash machine.

Two police officers arrived at the scene and were attacked by a gang member who was wielding a sledgehammer. One officer was hit in the head and arm when the window of the police car was smashed with the sledgehammer. After this the gang of three fled the scene by driving off in a dark coloured Audi A6 vehicle with false registration plates. The officer that was injured by the sledgehammer was from Sandwell and was fortunately able to avoid serious injury. He received treatment at the hospital for bruising, cuts and serious swelling on his arm and face from the incident. The Tesco store was closed at the time and no one else was injured.

Police have asked anyone who has seen this car to contact the West Midlands Police to help with their investigation and trace the whereabouts of the three gang members who were reported to have been dressed in black clothes with the faces covered. CCTV footage from the raid has been scoured and house enquires are being made, along with forensic investigations at the scene of the crime. It is believed that the tools the gang left behind may hold some clues as to the gang members identity.

The Chief Inspector of the West Midlands Police has said that he is thankful the police officer attacked didn’t receive major injury and that the thieves responsible for the crime will be tracked down.
