Forklift truck broke worker’s leg in three places
A 42-year-old employee of a food packaging company was injured by a forklift truck when he stepped backwards to turn around. The truck (which was carrying a large roll of printed film), hit his right leg and broke it in three places. The man was hospitalised for six days and had to have metal bars and pins inserted into his leg to repair the damage.
No defined pathway for forklift trucks
When the HSE (Health and Safety Executive) conducted an investigation, they found that there was no clear path for roadway painted onto the factory floor. A simple painted white or yellow line creating a separate walkway to help to keep forklift trucks and workers on foot apart, could easily have prevented the accident.
Company now uses pallet trolleys where possible
In the ensuing court case, the company pleaded guilty to breaches of the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992 and the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999, were fined £30,000 and were ordered to pay the court’s costs of £2,979. The company has now begun using pallet trolleys wherever possible. They are moved at walking pace only, and allow the operator of the trolley good, clear, all-round vision.
