"If you've been injured through no fault of your own you could be entitled to compensation. If you're unsure if you could claim, I recommend you call Accident Advice Helpline."

    St Albans claims

Accident Advice Helpline process many St Albans claims for personal injury each and every year, the majority of which are launched in relation to injuries sustained in the retail working environment.

Slip, trip and fall accidents in the retail environment

As far as the general public is concerned, the most common type of injury that happens in the retail environment is as a result of a slip, trip, or fall accident. These can be caused by uneven flooring, wet patches on the floor that cause people to slip, or by objects being left on the walkway where they can be easily tripped over. 95% of all slip, trip and fall accidents in the retail environment that cause injury, result in broken or fractured bones.

Car parks can be part of a retail environment too

Although many slip, trip or fall incidents happen inside the retail environment (i.e. inside shopping malls or stores), there are also a significant number, which take place outside in the open-air, typically either on the footpath, or in car parks. The prevalence of these types of accidents tends to peak during the winter when snow and ice are around, which is why you’ll now often see these areas being cleared of snow and ice by retail employees.

    Managing risk

Like any working environment, the management team of any shop, store, supermarket or shopping mall must carry out regular risk assessments. This is the accepted way of identifying and mitigating any hazards that could cause injuries, including those caused by slip, trip or fall incidents. These risk assessments must look at things like:

    • The condition of floor surfaces
    • The material used to surface the floors
    • The provision and placement of door mats at entrances and exits
    • Using matting in certain areas (for example where food and flowers are on display) to avoid contaminating the floor surface with slippery substances
    • Ensuring that any changes in the levels of a floor are clearly signposted
    • Adopting good housekeeping procedures
    • Using the right type of cleaning materials
    • Implementing a regular inspection procedure
    • Ensuring that shopping trolleys are regularly maintained
    • Ensuring that escalators are regularly maintained
