South Lakeland is a local government district which is situated inside the boundaries of the ceremonial county of Cumbria, in the far north west of England. The district includes much of the Lake District as well as north western parts of the Yorkshire Dales and as such is thought by many to be one of the most picturesque and impressive districts in the country.
Being largely rural in nature, the district does not feature a great many major settlements but the principal one is the town of Kendal which is home to the council headquarters, whilst Windermere is also a well-known town.
The Creation Of The South Lakeland District
The 1972 Local Government Act brought about a wide array of changes to local government all over the United Kingdom, which included the creation of a raft of new districts and boroughs on the 1st April 1974. The South Lakeland local government district was one of these and was formed from an amalgamation of a number of former administrative entities.
The entities which were merged were the Kendal borough, the Windermere urban district, most of the Lakes urban district, the South Westmorland Rural District, the Grange and Ulverston urban districts, the North Lonsdale Rural District and the Sedbergh Rural District. These previous entities were spread between a number of ceremonial and administrative counties but when they were brought together as South Lakeland, they were all brought under the banner of Cumbria.
South Lakeland’s Population
According to the most recently available population statistics, the district of South Lakeland as a whole is home to approximately 104,000 permanent residents. However, when you realise that the district covers more than 500 square miles you also realise that it is a comparatively sparsely populated area.
As such, South Lakeland doesn’t see as many accidents and injuries as busier, more densely populated urban areas but it does still play host to some. Some of those in turn, may well be of a sort which could lead to a South Lakeland accident claim and that makes it important for residents to learn a little more about them.
South Lakeland Accident Claim Proceedings
If an accident or incident occurs which causes injury to a party who was not at fault, then that injury victim is entitled to make a South Lakeland accident claim for personal injury compensation.
