Solihull is an area just outside of Birmingham that used to be considered really upmarket, and to buy a property there was very expensive. Right in the middle of it was one of the largest car factories in the country, and this provided local employment and kept Solihull as a very affluent place. It was not unusual for there to be a Solihull car accident though, as many people travelled to the factory as well.
Then in the late 1960s and early 1970s, a new housing estate was built between Birmingham and Solihull, by Birmingham City Council. This is more than a housing estate though. Chelmsley Wood as it is called, has a large shopping centre, swimming baths, several community centres, many schools for all ages of children, pubs and social clubs galore, a library and right at the edge of it, the National Exhibition Centre (NEC).
To a large extent, it helped solve the dire housing problems that Birmingham was suffering at the time, and many people suddenly had homes of their own, with all the facilities and amenities that such a large new estate needed. Initially it had quite a bad reputation locally for vandalism and crime, but this was soon reduced greatly by the addition of its own police station.
Then the government decided to alter boundaries, as they do from time to time, and Chelmsley Wood estate became part of Solihull. Suddenly, what had always been quite a small council, had this huge estate to deal with, and to start with they encountered some problems. That was many years ago though, and now Solihull and Chelmsley Wood are as one.
