Stonham Aspal is a village and civil parish found within the Mid-Suffolk local government district in the ceremonial county of Suffolk, in the East Anglia region of eastern England. The village is situated approximately five miles east of the nearest town of Stowmarket and closer still to the other villages of Mickfield, Little Stonham and Pettaugh. The village is found within a largely rural area but does have a fairly busy road, known as the A1120, running through it.
A Brief History Of Stonham Aspal
It is believed that the original settlement in the area now known as Stonham Aspal dates back to the Roman period, but the current settlement’s name can be traced only as far as the 13th century. The name can be directly translated from Old English as meaning ‘stone homestead’ and some 14th and 15th century ‘stone homesteads’ are still in evidence within the village.
For many years, the major industry in the village was that of agriculture. According to the 1881 census as many as 39% of residents were engaged in this sector. By 2011, however, this figure had plummeted to 6%, demonstrating that modern day Stonham Aspal has come on a great deal in the last century.
