If your child has a brain disorder and needs to go through brain surgery, this can be a very upsetting and stressful time. The recovery process is likely to be long and fragile as well, so it is important that you know how best to support your child and help them through their recovery, so that you can be sure they are getting the best treatment and recovery that they can. Here are some tips on helping your child after their brain surgery.

    • Follow the advice of your neurosurgeon. The surgeon involved in your child’s operation will be able to give you advice on how to support your child through recovery. Note this down and follow it to the letter. If you have any problems or questions you can always call them to follow up.
    • Feed them regularly. The body needs more fuel when recovering from a serious surgery, so feed your child as often as they are able to manage food, and make sure you give them healthy and nutritious food.
    • Get them to sit up quickly. Even after the most serious surgery, the worst thing you can do is allow your child to lay in bed for too long, as this will not help the recovery process along. Try to get your child to sit up a few days after surgery, and move forward, slowly, from there.
    • Keep them hydrated. Make sure your child always has water close to hand and is drinking steadily throughout the day. You can try juices and squash if your child does not like water.
