    Nantwich

Nantwich is a market town in Cheshire. It has an interesting history, dating back to Roman times when it was a key source of salt for the Roman garrisons at Chester and Stoke-on-Trent. Back then, salt was used as a preservative and a condiment, and Nantwich’s salt no doubt helped the local cheese and tanning industries blossom. The salt industry – that is, the industry that served much of England – can be dated back to the 10th-century.

In the Domesday Book, Nantwich is recorded as having eight salt houses and a castle, and it’s one of the few places in Cheshire to be marked on the Gough Map in 1355. It also has a short-lived history during the Norman period, when it was burnt to the ground by Normans.

The 2011 census showed a population of 17,424 in Nantwich.
