If you work within the quarrying industry and you get injured while at work, you might consider employing one of the solicitors in Leighton Buzzard to help you to launch a personal injury claim.
The quarrying industry
The quarrying industry is one of the more dangerous industries to work in. According to statistics on the HSE (Health and Safety) website, and in accordance with accident reports made out under the RIDDOR accident reporting procedure; since the year 2000 there have been more than 3,250 worker injuries, 27 of which have been fatal.
The QNJAC “Target Zero” initiative
The QNJAC (Quarries National Joint Advisory Committee) is the name of the body formed to oversee health and safety in the quarrying industry, and with “Target Zero”, and other initiatives before it, they have been successful in reducing the accident rate down by over 80%. Going forward, the aim of the QNJAC (under the auspices of Target Zero) is to bring about a further 15% year-on-year reduction up until the year 2015, after which the position can be reassessed.
The Quarries Regulations and the Approved Code of Practice
The Quarries Regulations 1999 sets out to tackle the hazards and risks that exist within the quarrying industry. It takes into account the large number of earth shifting vehicles, the use of explosives, and the handling of large quantities of heavy materials. Whilst the regulations alone will not prevent accidents and injuries, they are intended to increase awareness of health and safety in conjunction with the details published in the Approved Code of Practice.
Danger to the general public
It’s not just quarry workers who can get injured; members of the general public can also be hurt if they wander onto site. It’s therefore critically important that suitable barriers be erected at all quarry sites; especially if there are schools, colleges, shops and communities living in close proximity.
