How to enjoy camping

A camping holiday can be the ideal family vacation, or a great way to enjoy time with friends on holiday. Camping is cheaper than staying in a hotel, and also puts you right in the centre of nature, enjoying the sun coming up and going down, and fireside meals and conversations. Being out in nature can also be risky, though, so you should know how to enjoy your holiday safely and easily before you head out and set up your tent.

  • Find a good camp site. Depending on how often you have been camping, and how brave you are feeling, there are various types of campsite you can head out to, which will make you feel more secure and comfortable. Some campsites have toilets, showers and cafes, whilst others will be more rustic. Choose your campsite based on your level of experience.
  • Find a good tent. Find a tent which is adapted to camping in the wild rather than just camping in a back garden, a tent which has plenty of space and proper tent pegs, as well as an awning for bad weather. Finally make sure your tent is completely waterproof.
  • Think of how to cook and store food. If the weather is hot then work out how you are going to keep food cool until you are ready to cook and eat it, and think about buying a small camping stove, or whether or not you are allowed to set a fire. If you are unsure whether you will be able to cook food thoroughly then don’t buy food that requires cooking.
  • Bring light sources. Torches and lanterns will be helpful at night as you may need to leave your tent to use the bathroom, or in case of an emergency. Make sure you have more than one in case something goes wrong.
