The majority of people throughout the UK will know who Esther Rantzen is, but for the few who don’t, here are some facts about her, as she is our patron at Accident Advice Helpline and recommends our solicitors if you need to make a personal injury claim.
Esther was born in Berkhamsted in June 1940, the older of two sisters. She was educated in London and then went on to Oxford University where she performed with the dramatic society. After leaving there, she trained in secretarial skills.
Working at the BBC
Esther had several jobs at the BBC before she began working on a consumer programme called Braden’s Week. When Bernard Braden returned to his native Canada to present a similar programme, the BBC decided to start That’s Life which initially followed the same format as Braden’s Week. The format was changed over time and That’s Life became one of the most popular TV programmes in the 21 years it ran, reaching audiences in excess of 18 million.
Esther has campaigned tirelessly for the rights of children, the elderly, the disabled and consumers. People listened to what she had to say, and some of her campaigns led to changes in the law. It is down to Esther that there are seat belts in the backs of cars, and that children’s play areas have softer surfaces.
For the last ten years, as well as continuing this work and being involved in 15 other charities, she has worked hard to raise the awareness of the UK law that says if you have been injured because of the actions of someone else you should be compensated, and it is for this she recommends the solicitors at Accident Advice Helpline.Open Claim Calculator
Probably one of the main things Esther will always be remembered for is the creation of Childline in 1986, a free phone helpline for children who are distressed about absolutely anything. The Childline counsellors are trained to be able to help the children when they have no one else to turn to, and Esther Rantzen is one of the volunteer counsellors. Childline was the first of its kind in the world, and now there are over 150 other countries with children’s helplines, all because of Esther.
