If your child is ill or has been injured then they may need to spend time in hospital, and this can be fairly traumatic for a small child. The best way you can help your child to deal with the situation is to make the experience as fun as possible for them. Obviously they will be in pain and struggling with being in hospital, but if you can stay with them and make it seem more like an adventure then they should be able to cope.
- Pack books and games. Before you head to the hospital, get together a bag of clothes and anything else your child needs, then include books, DVDs and games to keep your child entertained. Pick out a favourite CD or make a fun playlist for an MP3 player that they can listen to as well.
- Pack a teddy or comfort blanket. Hospitals can be intimidating and frightening for a child. If they have something with them which reminds them of home and happier times this can really ease the process for them.
- Visit as often as you can. Call the hospital to find out how often you are allowed to visit and for how long. Then you can plan with other family members to be in the hospital whenever you are allowed so that your child is always surrounded by familiar faces.
- Play with your child. Whilst you are in the hospital with them, try to make every moment feel fun and carefree. They are dealing with a lot, so being able to enjoy the time you spend with them may be crucial for making sure that they do not have such a hard time in the hospital.
