Overcome a traumatic labour
Labour is an experience that many women will go through, and is an ultimately rewarding experience, even if it is painful and at times unpleasant. However, some women will suffer a more traumatic labour experience, and this can happen for a number of reasons. Once you have been through this experience you may find it hard to get over what happened to you and move on from it. Here are some tips on coping with your feelings after the fact.
Take time and grieve. You do not have to be okay with what happened to you straight away. Although you may put yourself under pressure to recover quickly in order to be there for your child, you do need to grieve for the experience you wanted to have, and deal with your emotions.
- Talk about it. It is much healthier to discuss what happened with friends, family or even a counsellor, so that you can get out your feelings and explore them in more depth.
- Try a support group. Speaking to other women who have gone through the same experiences as you can go a long way to making you feel normal again, and helping you to get through what happened to you – knowing that you are not alone.
- Spend time with your baby. Remember that the end result of your labour experience, however traumatic, was the birth of your child. Spend time with your child enjoying them and their company, so that you can feel it was all worthwhile.
- Document your child. Putting together a scrapbook of memories which focus on your child as he or she grows and develops will help your mind to switch to thinking about the child itself rather than the labour process which brought it to you.
