Blantyre in South Lanarkshire was home to the 19th century missionary and explorer, David Livingstone, and there is the David Livingstone museum dedicated to him in Blantyre. By the late nineteenth century there were mills in Blantyre, which had begun operating in the 18th century, as well as farms, and the workers did not really want to work in the newly sunk coal mines. The labour required to mine coal in the Blantyre area mainly came from Ireland during and after the potato famine. On the 22nd of October, 1877 there was an explosion in one of the mines in the area, and Blantyre went down in Scottish history as being the scene of the worst Scottish mining disaster. The death toll came to 207 miners, the youngest, a boy of only 11 years old. Six months after the explosion the widows of some of the deceased minors were taken to court and later evicted from their homes so that new miners could move into them with their families. These women could not claim personal injury compensation for the deaths of their husbands, even though it is possible that safety precautions were not taken in the mine. There would not have been any solicitors in Blantyre based who would have represented the widows on a ‘no win, no fee’ basis, and they wouldn’t have been able to pay for a solicitor, even if there had been a firm of solicitors in Blantyre in the area.
