When you are about to give birth, it is likely that you will be scared and nervous about what is going to happen. The last thing you need is to end up going to a hospital where you don’t feel supported or safe, as this will add to your anxiety and make the whole situation that much more stressful. Before your due date, you should do your research and make sure that you have chosen a birth hospital that makes you feel comfortable.
- Look for a hospital close by. There is no point choosing an amazing hospital which is over an hours away, as you have no idea where you will be or what you will be doing when you go into labour. Also, if you go into false labour one or more times, getting to the hospital will be very stressful, only to be sent home again.
- Do your research. Once you have narrowed your search down to hospitals close by then you should be looking for a hospital which has favourable reviews. An online search will help you to find testimonials from other people in your situation, and you can also ask around to see what experiences your friends and family have had.
- Speak to the doctors and nurses. Visit the hospital and see the labour wards for yourself, speaking to the doctors and nurses in charge to see if you feel comfortable and like them. If you love the hospital but aren’t comfortable with the staff, walk away, as the staff will add to or take away from your experience.
- Find out about birth centres. If you cannot find a hospital that you are comfortable with, look for specific birthing centres close to you, and see if they offer you a better option.
