Sir Winston Churchill was the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom during the war years of 1940 to 1945 and in the years 1951 to 1955 and is considered on the greatest leaders of the 20th century. Before he became Prime Minister he spent fifty years in politics where he held a variety of cabinet and political positions that include the President of the Board of Trade, First Lord of the Admiralty and Home Secretary. The Gallipoli Campaign during his term as First Lord of the Admiralty and its fallout caused him to leave government. He had a stint in the armed service but returned to government during the First World War. During this time in government he made some controversial decisions including returning the pound sterling to the gold standard and his opposition to the Indian Independence Movement.

Eventually, he would abdicate his government position and go into exile during the 1930s. However, he kept in contact with key government figures who would provide him with information on Germany’s military power and the growing Nazi movement. When World War II broke out he was reappointed to his previous position of First Lord of the Admiralty and when the current Prime Minister, Neville Chamberlain, resigned in May 1940 he became Prime Minister. He would soon inspire the British resistance with his steadfastness in not even considering surrender, compromise or defeat to Nazi Germany. This was of great significance as the United Kingdom was alone in its opposition to Adolf Hitler in the early days of the War. Part of his inspirational methods was his use of speeches and radio broadcasts that roused the British people. After the end of the War, his Conservative Party lost the 1945 election as Churchill was not seen as a man who could lead the nation in times of peace, as well as a desire for post-war reform.

Churchill would have one more term as Prime Minister when he won the 1951 election but this term would be overshadowed by foreign policy crises and his health issues in the latter part of the term. Today, he is considered as one of the most influential people in the United Kingdom’s history and one of its greatest Prime Ministers.
