One of the key things you need to do and remember when in an emergency situation is to stay calm and remember all of your training. You will have a general idea of what you are supposed to do in most emergency situations, but if this is your first time actually dealing with the situation then it can be tempting to lose your head and start to panic. Make sure that you stay calm and follow these simple tips for handling an emergency situation:
How to handle any emergency
- Take deep breaths. Whatever the situation, the first thing you should be doing is taking deep breaths to force yourself to remain calm and rational. When we panic we tend to hold our breath or breathe very shallowly, which can make us feel even more panicked. By breathing deeply, you almost force your body to feel more relaxed and process the situation more calmly.
- Work out what you need to do. There will be a step-by-step list of things you need to do in order that should form in your mind. Take a second to work out what needs doing and in what order, then stick to this. You want to follow your list unemotionally and in a timely manner so that you do not rush and make mistakes.
- Call the emergency services. Once the immediate threat is out of the way, then you should get the emergency services to the scene as soon as you can, so that they can deal with anything that you are not able to.
- Get out of the way. While you are waiting for the emergency services to arrive, find a spot far away from any danger to wait for them, so that you are not in continued danger.
