Diwali, the festival of lights, is a great time, when you can enjoy the fireworks and a hot curry to your heart’s content.
It happens just when the evenings start to get dark and the clocks go back so it’s a perfect antidote to the gloom, and something to really look forward to. For many people, it’s an important religious festival, but for others who are not religious it can be a chance to enjoy themselves and appreciate light and firework displays.
You need to be careful with fireworks though. Store them somewhere cool and dry, as if they’re put in a damp place like a basement they might not work, but of course, if you put them in your house right next to the kitchen cooker they might overheat and go off by accident.
When it comes to lighting them, do it very carefully. Set them out one at a time in an open space, and light from a distance with a long taper. Don’t bend over them with a match, as while there should be a delay before they go off, there’s no telling that they might not go off early with a bang in your face.
For this reason, you should never hold a firework in your hand and light it, but always set them in the ground.
Sparklers too should be handled with care, so don’t play with them or try anything like a sparkler fight, throwing them at people or pretending they are swords. Use them in a spacious area, not close to anyone else.
