How to turn down a job
Although people tend to think about what they will do if they don’t get a job, and try to work out how best to impress potential employers so that they do get the job that they want, there may come a time when you are offered a job that you decide you don’t want after all.
It is more likely that you will decide that you don’t want a job after the interview process, as otherwise you wouldn’t have applied for the job in the first place. If you are then offered the job, you need to let the employer down without ruining your reputation within the industry.
- Know your reasons. Instead of just saying no, you should be able to say why you are saying no, and why you don’t think that this job is a good fit for you. Try not to be negative about the company or the job role, as this reflects badly on you, but instead talk about your feelings and how you don’t fit well.
- Offer to stay in touch. If it is just the job role that you don’t think you would fit well in, then let the company know this and say that if anything else comes up you would be interested in hearing about it. This means that the employer doesn’t feel rejected, and could lead to a great opportunity in the future.
- Let them know right away. You might need a little time to think about it, but leaving an employer hanging for a long time while you decide isn’t fair on them or the other applicants. Once you know what your decision is, get back to the employer right away.
- Thank them for their time. Send a follow up email or letter which thanks the employer for their time and for offering you the role. This will go down well and leave them feeling positive about you.
