Taunton Deane is a borough in the county of Somerset, and as its name implies, its administrative offices are in the town of Taunton, which is the county town. The name Taunton comes from the fact that it is located on the banks of the River Tone, with ‘ton’ in Saxon, meaning settlement. There is evidence that the Romans were in Taunton, but the modern town began its development in Saxon times when it was a fortified place. It was clearly an important place then, as there was a mint in the town. By 904, there was a monastery in Taunton and in that year it gained its first charter. Of course today Taunton is a modern town, which takes care of its rich heritage.
