Milford Haven is a town and urban community within the county of Pembrokeshire in the south west of Wales. The town is sited on the northern side of the Milford Haven Waterway and its name in the traditional Welsh is Aberdaugleddau, meaning “mouth of the two Rivers Cleddau”.

The interesting history of Milford Haven

The town is actually relatively young, having been designed and constructed initially by Sir William Hamilton in 1790. Hamilton designed the town to a grid pattern. He intended it to be a whaling centre, but by 1800 it became apparent that Milford Haven was instead developing around its position as an important naval dockyard. This continued until 1814, when the Royal Navy moved its operation to Pembroke, and Milford Haven had to adapt to commercial usage which was fortunately a fairly successful transition for the town.

The next big shift in the town’s economic activity came during the 1960’s when Esso, the oil and petroleum giants, constructed an oil refinery in the area. This led to the town adapting to specialise in logistics for fuel oil and liquid gas, which then attracted further refineries and meant that Milford Haven took up its current position as one of the most important locations in the United Kingdom’s energy sector.

This large population and thriving industrial activity is clearly a benefit to Milford Haven in terms of pure economics, but does also create some issues for the area. For instance, it does mean that the town sees high levels of noise pollution and air pollution, increased amounts of traffic on the roads and a greater chance of accidents and injuries. This third issue is interesting, as it indicates that for personal injury solicitors in Milford Haven sees a greater number of compensation claims than other towns.
