How to cope with post traumatic stress disorder

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a type of disorder which affects you mentally and emotionally after you have been through a traumatic experience. It can come on immediately after the event, or take some time to kick in as you deal with the shock of the situation. It could also be fairly mild and pass quickly, or take a very long time to deal with and be emotionally draining for a long time. The key to getting through PTSD is to know how to recognise it and cope with it, so that its effect on your life is minimised.

    • Accept it. You need to understand that you do have PTSD and that this needs to be dealt with. A lot of people will try to stay in denial that they are suffering from post traumatic stress disorder, but it is far healthier to accept it and start dealing with it.
    • See a doctor. Ask your doctor for a referral to a therapist who can start talking you through what happened and help you to deal with all of the issues surrounding it in your mind.
    • Speak to friends and family. Letting those you love know how you are feeling and knowing that you have people that love you and are willing to listen to your thoughts and feelings can be a huge boost for you.
    • Consider medication. Do your research to be sure that you are choosing the right option for you, but in many cases medication can help PTSD in the short term.
