We all like to have takeaways and eat out at restaurants, but if you become ill from these things then it is most likely that you have got food poisoning.

Food poisoning is caused from bacteria and the best known ones are salmonella and E.Coli, but parasites, viruses or chemicals such as pesticides can also cause it. If you have treated yourself to a meal out and then ended up ill, you may have food poisoning and need to make a personal injury claim.

The reasons for food poisoning happening

The reasons for food poisoning happening are because proper care, in one way or another, has not been taken of the food and bacteria have been allowed to infiltrate. This could be because:

    • Someone who is ill or has dirty hands touched the food
    • Cross contamination of food
    • Eating food past its use by date
    • Not cooking the food properly
    • Not storing the food at correct temperatures
    • Leaving cooked food for too long at warm temperatures
    • The cooking area has not been kept clean
    • Work surfaces and utensils are dirty

    Vulnerable foods

There are some foods more vulnerable to being contaminated by bacteria than others, for example:

    • Unpasteurised milk
    • Burgers and sausages
    • Kebabs
    • Raw meat
    • Poultry and pork
    • Cooked sliced meats
    • Pre packed sandwiches
    • Pate
    • Soft cheese
    • Raw eggs
    • Raw shellfish

You may be able to make a personal injury compensation claim, if you have eaten any of these foods and have then become ill due to contaminated food.

What are the effects of food poisoning?

You will probably feel quite ill. The effects usually start a few hours after eating the bad food, but can take up to three days to appear. They are unpleasant and can include:

    • Vomiting
    • Stomach cramps
    • Diarrhoea
    • Loss of appetite
    • Muscle spasms
    • High temperature
    • Chills
    • Nausea

Some people are more susceptible to food poisoning than others, such as HIV and cancer sufferers whose immune system is low. Pregnant women, babies and the elderly are also a high risk. There have been several high profile cases where more than one person has died and the source has had to be traced.

Unfortunately, sometimes, the food poisoning makes someone really ill and they end up in hospital. At its worst, food poisoning can damage the central nervous system and even cause death.

It doesn’t matter if your case is serious or mild, you may be able to make a personal injury compensation claim, using the personal injury lawyer in Mayfield or one based elsewhere.
