"If you've been injured through no fault of your own you could be entitled to compensation. If you're unsure if you could claim, I recommend you call Accident Advice Helpline."

    Esther Rantzen

    Personal injury lawyer in Lanark

AAH is the leading personal injury lawyer in Lanark residents can contact if they have caught a zoonotic infection and wish to launch a personal injury claim for financial compensation. For those of you who have never heard of “zoonotic” illnesses, they are infections that can be transferred naturally between vertebrate animals and humans. Many people are at risk, including people in the farming industry, the zoo industry, and even pet owners.

    Rhomboencephalitis or “circling disease”

Although the incidence of zoonotic infections is relatively small, it can sometimes be very dangerous. For example in May 2013, a middle-aged farmer was diagnosed with Rhomboencephalitis, sometimes referred to as “circling disease”. This refers to the behavioural pattern of animals that have contracted the disease.

They roam aimlessly around in circles. The farmer’s symptoms were confusion, loss of balance, and facial drooping, together with an inability to swallow. It’s a serious disease with a contracted recovery period. It can sometimes prove fatal. Luckily incidences of this illness in humans are quite rare.

    Warning for pregnant women

As the lambing season approaches, pregnant women should be especially wary of coming into contact with pregnant, livestock, including sheep. Close contact with such an animal can endanger the pregnant woman’s health, and/or that of her unborn child. Infections include:

    • Chlamydiosis
    • Toxoplasmosis
    • Listeriosis

All of these infections are associated with causing abortion in animals. Although the risk of infection is small, it is nonetheless important that pregnant women are fully aware of any possible danger.
