The English can sometimes be a self-depreciating bunch and they never like to make a fuss. And many of our clients come to us saying that although they’ve wondered whether they could be entitled to make a claim, they are not sure they have a realistic case – some are even worried they might look selfish, opportunistic or just silly. However, if you’re wondering if you should go and talk to a personal injury lawyer, here are some of the funnier quotes to be heard on personal injury statement.
Funny personal injury quotes
“I looked across at my mother in law which made me drive over the embankment.”
“I had no idea the speed limit applied after midnight.”
“I drove into the wrong driveway and hit a tree I haven’t got.”
There are also examples of extremely frivolous suits and while there may well be some here in the UK – it’s to the US that you really have to look. Take, for example, the famous story of an elderly woman who was burned by a cup of hot coffee served at MacDonald’s.
Now it is tempting to hate fast food chains but it’s also understandable why they decided to fight when she tried to claim £20,000. This was a mistake as that claim eventually rose to $200,000 and she also claimed over a million in punitive damages.
Or we can look at a man who claims he injured his thumb because he pulled the knob at the same time as someone arrived on the other side. He tried and succeeded in claiming that the injury had forced him off work for six months.
Fact from fiction
These are just some of the more famous stories floating about the world and many may have migrated into the realm of myth but they do underscore a reasonably serious point about making a claim.
Firstly, no matter how silly you think your case is, there is someone who has made a similar mistake. Second, pressing ahead with claims such as these is normally going to be a big mistake. For example, if the hot coffee lady had come to Accident Advice Helpline then our advice would have been that there was no realistic chance of winning and in this country that would be correct. McDonalds might have served a hot cup of coffee, but it’s difficult to imagine any particularly serious injuries that could have resulted beyond a slightly scalded lip.
