Slips, trips and falls in public buildings

Slips, trips and falls are the most common types of accident, as they can happen virtually anywhere.

You may have slipped on a wet floor in a shop or supermarket, or any other building that is open to the public. If something has been spilled on the floor in a supermarket, for example, it should have been cleared up. Signs should have been in place to warn people that the floor was slippery. If there were no warning signs and you slipped and fell, fracturing a limb, perhaps, you may be able to claim compensation as the staff had been negligent in their duty.

The claim would be filed against the owners of the supermarket who must have public liability insurance to cover the costs of potential claims against them.

A trip and fall in the street

You may have tripped in the street because of an uneven pavement, or an exposed tree root. Perhaps you twisted your ankle and sprained it because your foot was lodged in a pothole in the road. In any of these cases, you would probably be able to file a claim for injuries against the local authority. The local authority has a responsibility for keeping roads and pavements well-maintained. Failure to do so is a matter of negligence.

Slips and falls at railway stations

If you slipped on ice or snow last winter at a railway station, you may be entitled to make a claim against the owners of the premises. Staff at railway stations have to ensure the safety of the public, and that means ensuring there are no icy patches on the platform, for example.

If you slip and fall on a platform because it has not been cleared, you may be entitled to pursue a claim for injuries.
