    Been diagnosed with food poisoning? Need claims advice that you can trust? Call the experts and start your claim!

    Many people suffer from the consequences of food poisoning every year. Unfortunately though, few people are aware of their legal right to claim personal injury compensation for their condition, and they may not even report the illness to a medical practitioner. This lapse can be dangerous to their health, as the consequences of undiagnosed and untreated food poisoning can mean that dehydration develops, leaving the victim very poorly indeed.

    If you or someone close to you have developed food poisoning through no fault of their own within the last three years, then you may be legally entitled to claim personal injury compensation for your condition.

    What is food poisoning?

    Food poisoning occurs when foods become contaminated by pathogens such as bacteria, viruses, or parasitic organisms. These can infect food by reproducing rapidly at ambient temperatures, and the number of pathogens can reach levels dangerous to health if eaten.

    What are the symptoms of food poisoning?

    Food poisoning may develop rapidly after contaminated foods have been consumed, and may cause:

    • Nausea;
    • Headaches;
    • Stomach pains;
    • Fevers;
    • Vomiting;
    • Diarrhoea;
    • Weakness;
    • Fatigue; and
    • Dizziness.

    Generally, food poisoning symptoms can arise within 6 to 24 hours after consuming contaminated foods, although it may be quicker in some victims.

    Treating food poisoning

    Food poisoning should always be diagnosed by a medical practitioner, and if symptoms persist then it may be necessary to contact an out-of-hours service for further advice.

    Treatment may consist of:

    • Resting in bed to reduce the stress on the body;
    • Drinking small sips of clear fluids regularly to maintain hydrostatic balance;
    • Avoiding foods until symptoms have subsided, then trying easily digestible foods slowly;
    • Avoiding contact with others for at least 48 hours after symptoms subside to avoid infecting others; and
    • Taking oral rehydration salts to replenish the body’s mineral, salt, and fluid levels.
