Suffering painful carpal tunnel syndrome symptoms?
Carpal tunnel syndrome is a relatively common condition which affects people of all ages and backgrounds, however women are statistically more likely to develop carpal tunnel syndrome than men.
Carpal tunnel syndrome affects the wrists and fingers and is caused by the compression of the median nerve in the wrist. This nerve is responsible for the sensation and movement of the fingers. It is unclear quite what causes the median nerve to become compressed, however certain risk factors have been identified and may increase the likelihood of developing carpal tunnel syndrome:
- A family history of carpal tunnel syndrome;
- Pregnancy (it does tend to disappear once the baby has been born);
- A previous wrist injury; and
- Repetitive and strenuous work using the hands and wrists.
The carpal tunnel is made up of eight small bones, called the carpal bones, and a tough fibrous tendon which acts as a pulley to move the fingers. If the median nerve becomes compressed, then symptoms may begin gradually over a period of time and are often worse at night. It starts with:
- Pins and needles in the index and middle fingers;
- Pain and discomfort in the same two fingers;
- Weakness in the thumb;
- Loss of grip and function of the fingers; and
- Insomnia due to the pain at night.
