    If you have been a victim of an accident that was not your fault and are planning to claim non-fault accident compensation, there are certain things you can do to make your solicitors life easier.

    The chances of a successful claim being made for the maximum amount of compensation possible are much higher, when victims have managed to keep a clear evidence base and details of the accident in the early stages. Check this list of things you can do to help and protect your non fault accident claim from the start.

    Details of the accident for non-fault accident compensation

    Your solicitor will be pleased if you can provide more than just a location and a rough date of the accident when you first get in touch. The types of information you can keep to hand include the exact date, time and location of your accident, details of how it happened including the moments before the accident occurred, who and what was involved in the accident as well as what you think caused the accident.

    You can also write down who you think was responsible for the accident and what was said by other people at the scene both before, during and after the accident occurred.

    Witness details

    If there were witnesses at the scene, such as pedestrians, drivers of other cars or people that you work with, these people can be incredibly valuable to your compensation claim as they are classed as ‘independent witnesses’ and can corroborate your story if there is any dispute over what happened.

    If you can, get details of their names, addresses, and any contact numbers they are willing to give. If the police were involved at any point, make a note of the officer dealing with the case and any crime reference number the case has been given.

    Photos of the accident

    It might sound a bit gory, but snapping a couple of pictures of the accident scene can help a lot with your compensation claim. Even if you don’t have pictures of the actual accident, sometimes a photo of the location can help to describe how the accident occurred and who was at fault.

    If there are any warning signs, road signs or other items pertinent to the case, get photos of these too. Equally, if there are no signs and you feel that there should be, take photographs showing this to help your case.

    Injury details

    Although your solicitor may ask you to attend an appointment with their own doctor, you should keep a note of any treatment you get immediately following the accident. Take a note of doctors and nurses names, as well as the contact details for the hospital or surgery you attended.

    Also note any injuries you sustained that did not require medical attention at the time, such as bruises, cuts and other ‘minor’ ailments.

    Expense records for your non-fault accident compensation claim

    Following your accident, start a folder to keep all the bits of paper in that you will accumulate. In here, keep all the receipts, bills and evidence of any money you have had to spend, or have not earned, as a result of the accident.
