Have dangerous chemicals caused a Newtown accident?
If your job involves working with toxic chemicals, it is possible that you could contract an illness or experience a Newtown accident because of it. Even job roles which involve working with paint can lead to illnesses over time. For example, when lead paint was commonly used, it wasn’t believed to pose a threat to human health. However, people exposed to it over a long period of time, such as painters and decorators, were at risk of becoming ill from it.
While household items such as paints and cleaning materials can be toxic, if they are used appropriately and in small amounts then they shouldn’t cause you any health problems. Of course, if you use a cleaning product accidentally or it is ingested, you will need to seek medical help immediately, as it could cause a serious Newtown accident or even a fatality.
If you use these types of products in your work, you could be at even more risk of suffering an accident. If the products are for industrial use, as opposed to home use, they could be stronger and contain more chemicals. This means that if an accident does occur, your injuries could be worse.
If you are required to work with these types of materials, you should be able to do so safely. If your employer fails to take steps to ensure your health and safety, or doesn’t provide you with appropriate safety equipment, they could be held responsible if a Newtown accident did occur. If, for example, your employer didn’t allow you to work in a well-ventilated area or wouldn’t provide safety goggles, you could potentially claim compensation from them if an accident were to occur as a result.
As the dangers of some chemicals aren’t realised until damage has occurred, employers have often faced these types of claims in the past. In addition to claiming for an accident that has occurred because of toxins, you could also make a claim if you contract an illness after being exposed to a dangerous chemical at work.
