Advice and support for negligence claims in West Dorset

Did you know that the name of the county of Dorset is derived from the town of Dorchester? Dorchester was founded in the first century by the Roman Invaders of Britain. It is likely that the place name was derived from the ancient Brittonic language word Dornwara, meaning ‘a place where pebbles may be found‘.The ending of the place name, chester is thought to be derived from the Old English word ceaster which was the name for a Roman town.

However, although the first major town in the region was constructed in the first century, Dorset has been the location of human activity from at least the Stone Age, around 8000 BC. There is evidence of human settlement dating from 3000 BC, in the shape of the Dorset Cursus. The Dorset Cursus is a huge Neolithic earthwork monument in the form of a pair of 6 mile long parallel banks and ditches carved into the landscape. The function of the Cursus is not entirely clear but it is thought to have had a ceremonial or religious significance. What is certain is that the Dorset Cursus and other such earthwork monuments found in area across the Ridgeway are some of the oldest prehistoric constructions in the country.
