Broken wrist

Broken wrist injuries can be a huge problem

Commonly, a broken arm or wrist is usually caused by a fall onto an arm which is outstretched. Normally, it takes six to eight weeks to heal in adults. You will probably know if you have broken your wrist as your wrist bone will be extremely painful and there may also be swelling or tenderness around the injured area as well as bleeding.

If it’s a clean break of the wrist, you may have heard a snap, crack or grinding noise during the accident. The bone can break straight across, diagonally, or in a spiral pattern. In severe cases, the bone may break into many pieces, stick out at an angle or poke through the skin.

How do you know if a wrist is broken?

The only way to be certain if you have broken your wrist is by a scan at hospital. This means that you will have sought medical attention which could certainly help your claim for broken wrist compensation.

The following are some common medical statements used when doctors treat you. It may also be beneficial to know these in case any of the following are mentioned in the claim details:

  • simple or closed fracture – an easily treated break with little damage to the surrounding tissue
  • compound or open fracture – a complicated break with damage to the surrounding skin
  • comminuted fracture – the bone has broken into several pieces
  • hairline fracture – a minor crack to the bone, which only shows up faintly on X-ray.
