    Miners injury claim

Along with the construction industry and despite all the latest technology in safety equipment above and below ground, mining remains one of the UK’s most dangerous occupations. Obviously, with the closure of many of Britain’s coal pits over the past 30 to 40 years, the volume of mining accidents has decreased.

    Exposure to coal dust

However, the controversy surrounding pneumoconiosis or ‘black lung’ as it became known – a disease of the respiratory system caused by exposure to particles of coal dust – as in other types of mining where airborne chemical agitates have been inhaled, has continued to rage. However, for many miners now retired and suffering respiratory problems and lung disease, it is not too late to make a miners injury claim. The disease emanates from what is known as injury sustained from an occupational hazard.

Coal extraction in the UK over the years and even the present has led to various types of occupational injury and a miners injury claim can still be made against former employers such as the National Coal Board and the British Coal Corporation.

    Types of injury illnesses

We know the types of injury illnesses which can result from often difficult and hazardous industrial occupations. Our records show that in many successful awards for miners injury claim, lung and breathing illnesses brought on by the job take five main medical conditions:

    • Emphysema – damaged lung tissue, affecting shape and function of the lungs and causing shortness of breath. It’s caused by inhaling harmful chemicals and dust over long periods, a classic example being a miner taking in coal dust particles in poorly ventilated workspaces.
    • Chronic Bronchitis – swelling of the bronchial passageways in the lungs leading to a constant coughing, wheezing and shortness of breath.
    • Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disorder – a lung disorder affects the airflow and is really a corporate name for a combination of the two conditions mentioned above.
    • Pneumoconiosis – where the lungs become scarred, known as fibrosis. It’s a disease at the focus of many a miners injury claim and is caused by miners breathing in coal dust or from minerals such as silica or even particles from metals like beryllium and iron, again over several years.
    • Lung Cancer – growths or tumours in the lungs resulting usually from first contracting the above conditions.
