Take care of older people this winter

Winter is a time when older people, in particular, can be quite vulnerable.

If you have an elderly neighbour or relative, check that they are ok, particularly if temperatures drop and it is snowy or icy. They may be worried about going out, so offer to do some grocery shopping for them or take them some essentials.

They may just appreciate some company.

It is important for anyone to stay warmly wrapped on winter walks but for older people, hypothermia or coughs and colds can easily set in. So encourage them to come out with you if it is not too slippery outside, but make sure they are carefully dressed first. It’s good to take even a bit of exercise and vary the view a bit.

Perhaps you can go with them to a café for a cup of tea, so they have a destination in mind and can sit down when they get there without feeling that a walk is aimless, or that asking to sit down is embarrassing.

Make Sure They can Walk Safely

Older people, like anyone, can feel a bit shy sometimes about using walking aids, but it’s important that they have something to lean on if they need it. A walking stick, crutches or zimmer frames are useful if they feel even a bit unsteady. Pride is one thing, but a broken hip is quite another and the consequences of breaks can be serious, so do encourage the use of supports like this.

Sensible shoes are also important. Make sure that your friend’s shoes have a good grip and a very low heel or flat sole. The chats can be just as important as the gentle exercise in keeping your friend’s spirits up. Loneliness in older people can be very isolating.

    Call a Good Solicitor

If anything happens to your friend while you are out walking, and they are injured, call our Methil no win no fee* solicitors.

Perhaps they tripped up on the pavement, or slipped on some ice that should have been cleared. It is the responsibility of the council to make sure that the streets are very safe, because of the damage it can do if it isn’t.

A lot of serious accidents happen because of simple trips and slips. It’s not just the more dramatic car crashes that have lasting impacts.

Call our Methil no win no fee* solicitors to discuss compensation if there is an accident.

As well as ringing the Methil no win no fee* team, you can use our 30 Second Calculator to work out how much money you could get. It will tell you the amount for free and then you can give us a ring.
